BOSTON —A mural on the side of Boston's tallest building is coming down.

The mural by French artist JR appeared in September on the side of 200 Clarendon, which is still referred to by locals as the John Hancock Tower. JR said on his website that it started coming down Wednesday.

Installed between the 44th and 50th floors of the building, the artwork depicts a man in shorts standing on what appears to be a dock with a ladder. The mural is 150 feet wide and 86 feet tall.

The mural was the final piece of a three-part series of temporary public art at the building.

Bryan Koop, executive vice president at Boston Properties, which owns the building, tells The Boston Globe the mural was only supposed to be up for six weeks but was so popular it was left in place longer.
