It's been exactly 8 weeks since I started to track my weight, so I think it's a good time for a review.I've lost 31 pounds so far, about 4 pounds per week. This is much faster than I expected (I had hoped for 1.5-2 pounds a week). It also turned out to be much easier than expected. Instead of requiring sacrifice and suffering, it just requires some discipline and some planning. If I knew before that it was so easy, I would have definitely done a long time ago. So this is my conclusion to anybody who is thinking about losing extra weight: you can do it.
These days my weight is safely below 170 pounds, which means that my BMI (body-mass index) is below 25, which means that the US government officially no longer considers me overweight. I know that I am overweight and still have more fat to lose. I know that this BMI threshold of 25 is politically motivated and not scientific. But it still feels nice. Definitely nicer than when I started (and my BMI was borderline between "overweight" and "obese").
Just as I was going to, I started fasting one day a week (not eating for the entire day, which is a 36 hour fast). I was doing it for a month, and it doesn't seem neither hard, nor particularly useful. The weight loss rate also stayed the same (I compensated for the fasting day by increasing my daily calorie budget to 1600), but the weight graph became much less smooth and predictable. I am not sure I like it (even though the red line stays quite straight), and I think I'll stop my weekly fasts for now, since I don't see any benefit in it. I am planning longer one-time fasts, though. A three day fast pretty soon, if I can fit in my schedule; and a one-two week fast sometime in April-May.
Apart from being 31 pounds lighter and about 4 sizes narrower, I think I became healthier, too. I haven't had any cold during these two months, even though I was biking all the time, sometimes in rather extreme conditions (cold, wind, rain, etc.).
Finally, my mood has changed considerably. I already did many things I've never expected myself to do (started exercising, started getting up early, started fasting, gave up drinking tea), and I am planning more.
In a word, it's been a complete success so far. I am very much satisfied.
Now comes the next challenge. I will be on vacation for two weeks, with no scale, and no reasonable way to count calories. I wonder how it will work for me.
